Camp Granite Lake Glossary

When your camper arrives at camp they’ll hear sayings like: ‘The ‘Be Kind Speech’, ‘Hopper and Scrapper’, ‘Sloopy’ and ‘Snack Shack.’  What do these all refer to?  Check out our list of camp lingo and traditions and share with your camper.  Have questions on these or anything else to do with camp? The Be Kind Speech is our social contract with each other and the rules we use to establish a kind and caring community.  The rules are: Be Kind – take the time to help and be a friend  Be Kind-  speak to each other with tolerance and respect, even when we disagree or it’s hard to do Be Kind – If someone hurts your body or hurts your feelings, you need to find one of us to help you work through it.  It’s not okay not to tell somebody!

Located at the Intermediate Town Center, we use an old railroad bell as our clock at camp.  We ring it to wake us up in the morning, between activity periods, and to let us know when it is time for meals.

DnD – Dungeons and Dragons a Camp Granite Lake favorite!  DND is an interactive fantasy game that campers love to play in their cabins before bed and during Organized Free Time!

Embers – Each Wednesday night at camp, cabins take some time to connect and reflect on their week during Embers.  Counselors guide their campers through a thoughtful conversation and cabins spend time connecting with each other. Some popular embers themes are ‘Share The Joy’ and ‘Hidden Strengths’.

Flip Test – After learning sailing fundamentals in one of our smaller boats, Intermediate and Senior Village campers can opt for the ‘flip test’ where they can prove their sailing skills by uprighting a swamped Sunfish.

Guardian Protectorate – The overlook located in the central part of our Fort Building Kingdom. The Guardian Protectorate is where the Guardian Protector (Counselor 😉 keeps an eye on the kingdom.   It’s also the only fort built from stone!

Keylogs – Each Friday night we take time to reflect on our week with our Campfire & Keylog Ceremony.  After some songs, quotes and stories, each camper has the opportunity to approach the campfire and place a ‘keylog’ into the fire to recognize someone who helped support them that week.

Thunder Ridge – Located on the ‘West Ridge Trail’, Thunder Ridge provides panoramic views of the Continental Divide.  With beautiful rock outcroppings and a nice flat area, it’s a place frequented during both day and night hikes!

Town Center – Each village at camp has their own Town Center where they meet for Embers as well as Village Evening Programs.  Our Jr. Village uses our beautiful fireplace in the Big Hall, our Intermediate Village town center is located directly next to our Snack Shack, and is where we meet for snack and between activity periods, and our Sr. Village has a beautiful spot on the north side of the lake.

Villages – We divide camp into three villages by grade. Juniors (Grades 2-4), Intermediates (Grades 5-6), Seniors (Grades 7-9).  You choose your activities and live in in cabins with your village.
